Definition of "Transfered by" on details page... |
Judgeing from the below nathenson thread, correct me if i'm wrong, but on a show'd details page, the "Taped By:" box is where the Taper's name is put, and the "Transfered By:" box is where the
original .wav > .shn converter person's name goes? . I appologize if it seems a dumb question, but since i first heard about the archive, i had always thought that the 'Transfered by' box was for whomever
transfered the .shn files to the archive. Is this inncorrect? I didn't really distinquish for myself really, because i was the one taping/converting/transfering to archive my shows i taped, so my name was all applicable, but i just wanted to clarify this point for future other taper's uploads i do for them.
And along the same lines, if the .wav > .shn converter is unknown, then the box is left blank, right? is there any way this can be put in the FAQ as some sort of definition, so future confusion doesn't ensue? thanks a tone. keep uploading guys!

Re: Definition of 'Transfered by' on details page... |
This should go in the FAQ.
Transferred by, as I originally envisioned it, is for the name of the person who did the original DAT/MD/Cassette > WAV transfer, not WAV > SHN.
The term is vague. Do people have a better recommendation on what to call the field?

okay, good to hear jon, yeah, a FAQ entry would be killer.
hmm, perhaps "Recording converted by:" and it could be a little definition pop-up, like you have for batting averages, where you can put what you just put about it being whoever converted the original MD/DAT to .wav
if you want to add a field, you can add "Uploaded to archive by:" or just "Uploaded by:" but then again, moving .shn files to the archive isn't really any special feat, and doesn't really require a name box on the details page.
Thoughts?

Wouldn't this get confused with the person who converted the SHNs to WAVs?

Or what about "Source > Computer by:" - unless I'm wrong, WAV isn't the only end format (AIFF?)
While we're on it, is "lineage" a good term?

"Conversion by:" would cause less confusion because even myself thought Transfered by meant the person who transfered the show to the archive

As confusing as it is, that's the term...learn it, love it, use it. Right under that there is an "Uploaded By" field. I'm guessing that's where the name/email/identity of the person who uploaded (the official term of the files going from the "uploader's" computer to the archive. I don't think we need to change the terminoligy to deal w/ confusion, we just need to have folks learn the terminoligy :)

Re: Misspelling of 'Transfered by' on details page... |
learn it, love it, use it
...but do spell it right, as
"Transferred by"
(note to Jon. ;) )
BTW, "transfer" in trading circles is actually a shorthand for "DAT transfer", usually meaning
bits on a DAT tape> bits in CDR-ready form (ie, on an audio CD or on a HD or packed into data files)

Re: Misspelling of 'Transfered by' on details page... |
I think it would be great to have definitions of all the meta-terms available via FAQ. To help along that process add that when dealing with a laptop recording there is no transfer --- so leave the "transferred by" field blank.
